About Counselling

Counselling is a form of talking therapy which is offered in a private space. A counsellor will offer acceptance, honesty and understanding.

What Is Counselling?

Over time you may feel the relationship becomes one of trust. It is important that you feel comfortable with your counsellor, so you can talk freely and openly. You may want to explore difficult feelings, relationships and circumstances in your life.

I am a 'person centred' counsellor and this means that you are at the heart of our work together. It's a bit like you being in the driving seat and me being sat beside you.

I can help give you a different perspective on your life and circumstances, which can be useful for untangling where you are now, identifying unhelpful patterns and working towards any desired changes.

“This is a moment of suffering. Suffering is a part of life. Let me be kind to myself in this moment. Let me give myself the compassion I need”

— Kristin Neff.

What Counselling Isn't

Counselling isn't about 'fixing' you, giving you advice or telling you what you should think or do. We will work at your pace and I will support you to find your own answers, as these are likely to be the 'right' answers for you.

The beauty of counselling is that what you learn is not forgotten - like having tools in your toolbox and you can carry them with you always. You can't unlearn what you have learned, you can only continue to grow.

What happens in a counselling session?

We would arrange a mutually convenient day and time to meet. In the first session I will ask you for some contact details and what you would like to achieve from your counselling experience. This is helpful so that I understand where you would most like be.

Our first meeting might be more of a 'getting to know you' session, so I can understand a little more about you and your life story. I might also reflect back to you what I have heard, sometimes this can be an invitation for you to consider an issue more deeply or from a different perspective. Often this can help you gain some clarity on an experience or situation.

Our sessions together last 50 minutes which might sound like a really long time to talk, but usually time passes quickly.
