About Counselling

Counselling is a form of talking therapy which is offered in a confidential setting. A counsellor will offer acceptance, honesty and understanding.

What Is Counselling?

Over time you may feel the relationship with your counsellor becomes one of trust. It is important that you feel comfortable, so you can talk freely and openly. You may want to explore difficult feelings, relationships and circumstances in your life.

I am a 'person centred' counsellor and this means that you are at the heart of our work together. It's a bit like you being in the driving seat and me being sat beside you.

I can offer you a different perspective on your life and current situation, which can be useful for untangling where you are now; identifying unhelpful patterns and working towards any desired change.

What Counselling Isn't

Counselling isn't about 'fixing' you, giving you advice or telling you what you should think or do. We will work at your pace and I will support you to find your own answers, as these are likely to be the 'right' answers for you.

The beauty of counselling is that what you learn is never forgotten - like having tools in your toolbox which you can carry with you always. You can't unlearn what you have learned, you can only continue to grow.

What happens in a counselling session?

We would arrange a mutually convenient day and time to meet. In the first session I will ask what you would most like to take away from your counselling experience. This is so that I understand where you would most like be and how we can get you there.

Our first meeting might be more of a 'getting to know you' session, so I can understand a little more about your life story. I might also reflect back to you what I have heard, sometimes this can be an invitation for you to consider an issue more deeply or from a different perspective. Often this can help you gain some clarity on an experience or situation.

Our sessions together last 50 minutes which might sound like a long time, but often time passes quickly.
